On doing a PhD in our group at the Institute of Logic, Language and Computation

We have has no US-style ‘PhD program’ into which you can ‘enroll’ by applying in a selection process and then becoming a PhD student.

We have, from time to time PhD vacancies, listed on this page and at this link
http://www.uva.nl/en/about-the-uva/working-at-the-uva/vacancies/vacancies.html
These positions are not only fully funded, the person who gets any of these is also a member of the staff – these are proper jobs, with pension schemes, social benefits etc.

Another possibility is to be proposed for the yearly annual selection internal to the ILLC for the scheme ‘PhD in the Humanities’ which takes place normally at the very beginning of January, and has a two-tier selection process. If you interested in being sponsored for this scheme under the supervision by one of us, please send a motivation statement of max 500 words, a full CV and an initial proposal for research topic at the beginning of the academic year (1 sep). The research topic has to fall strictly within the range of our research interests.

You can also do a self-funded PhD. This is an option in which you and one of us agree on a project that has to be completed in a maximum of four years, preferably less, and for which you can count on facilities and support from the University of Amsterdam. Funding has to come from another source. If you interested in doing a self-funded PhD under the supervision by one of us you are welcome to send any time a motivation statement of max 500 words, a full CV and an initial proposal for research topic. The research topic has to fall strictly within the range of our research interests.
