The Department of Philosophy of the Universiteit van Amsterdam is looking for a lecturer for two courses in the period February-July 2018.

-Lecturer BA Introduction to the Philosophy of Mathematics (April-May 2018)
-Lecturer BA Realism and Anti-Realism en BA-afronding Logica (February-June 2018)

*Lecturer BA Introduction to the Philosophy of Mathematics (April-May 2018)*

This is an elective course in the Philosophy BA. It is attended by Philosophy students, as well as Mathematics students and students from other subjects. The course focuses on metaphysical and epistemological questions from the philosophy of mathematics. See the course catalogue for further details:

Level: second- and third-year bachelor students, also accessible for non-philosophy students.

Teaching method: The course involves one three-hour session per week. Each session consists of two parts: the first part is a lecture, in which a position in the philosophy of mathematics is presented; the second part is a seminar, in which an article on the position introduced is discussed.

Qualifications: A PhD degree in Philosophy, with philosophy of mathematics among the areas of competence. Experience with undergraduate teaching is required.

The first part of the course (Feb-Mar) is a specialisation course in the Philosophy BA. The course focuses on the realism/anti-realism disputes, starting from Michael Dummett’s reconstruction of the disputes. See the course catalogue for further details:

During the second part of the course (Apr-June) students write their BA theses in logic or related areas (e.g. philosophy of logic, philosophy of language and philosophy of mathematics). See the course catalogue for further details:

Level: second- and third-year Philosophy students for the Realism and Anti-Realism course, third-year Philosophy students for the remaining part of the course.

Teaching method: From February to May, there are two two-hour sessions a week. In February and March, the Realism and Anti-realism course takes place. In this perios, sessions are used to introduce new material or for in-class discussion of philosophical texts. In March and April, sessions are used to help students out with work on their thesis, so there are, e.g., sessions in which students present material needed for their thesis, sessions in which students present chapter drafts and feedback sessions. In the last part of the course (from the end of May and in June), students receive individual supervisions on their theses.

Qualifications: A PhD degree in Philosophy, with philosophy of logic or philosophy of language among the areas of competence. Experience with undergraduate teaching is required and experience with supervising undergraduate thesis will be an advantage.

*Conditions of employment*
For teaching both courses, the department offers a temporary position of 13,6 hours a week (0,36 fte) in the period from 1 February 2018 to 31 July 2018. Applications for teaching only one of the two courses are also welcome. The salary will depend on qualifications and work experience starting from a minimum of €2,588 to a maximum of €4,757 gross per month for a full-time position of 38 uur per week (schaal 10/11, CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten).
